HOW TO ACHIEVE GOOD BALANCE ON THE OUTSIDE FOOT

The problem

Weight transfer from one ski to the other has been the topic of many discussions recently. At our on-snow training sessions, several skiers attempt to actively transfer the weight to the outside ski by pressing on the ground. Is this really the correct technique?

The solution

Whether making a turn as a beginner or expert, the skier uses the same technique to build solid balance on the outside leg. When the skier initiates the turn, he or she begins turning the outside leg in the hip socket, which defects the skis in the desired direction. When the movement is well executed, the skier’s balance gradually transfers to the outside foot. A good way to teach this movement is to place a hand on the inside of the outside leg during the turn and applying pressure (laterally, not toward the ground). Balance on the outside ski is the result of the lower body turning against the upper body, not leaning over the outside ski.
